Kendo
The Way of the Sword
History
Kendo evolved from the ancient swordsmanship (kenjutsu) practiced by Japan's samurai class. After the Meiji Restoration ended the samurai era, practitioners developed the use of the shinai (bamboo sword) and bogu (protective armor) to allow full-contact training safely. Today Kendo is practiced worldwide as both a martial art and competitive sport, maintaining the spiritual and disciplinary values of the sword traditions.
Philosophy
The purpose of Kendo, as defined by the All Japan Kendo Federation, is "to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the katana (sword)." The concept of "Ken" (sword) and "Zen" (mind) in harmony reflects the ideal that physical technique and mental/spiritual development must advance together. Practitioners cultivate composure, decisiveness, and integrity.
Training Areas
Suburi (Sword Swinging Exercises)
Basic solo swinging drills that build correct cutting mechanics, body coordination, and stamina. Foundation of all subsequent technique.
Kihon-Waza (Basic Techniques)
Fundamental strikes to the four valid targets: men (head), kote (wrist), do (body), and tsuki (throat thrust). Practiced with a partner using shinai.
Ji-Geiko (Free Practice)
Unrestricted sparring in full bogu that applies technique, strategy, and spirit developed through kihon training.
Kata (Forms)
Ten Nihon Kendo Kata preserve classical technique using bokuto (wooden swords). Required for dan promotion, they transmit the principles of the samurai sword traditions.
Key Techniques
- Men-uchi (head strike)
- Kote-uchi (wrist strike)
- Do-uchi (body strike)
- Tsuki (throat thrust)
- Debana-kote (wrist strike at initiative)
- Nuki-do (evasive body strike)
- Kaeshi-do (counter body strike)
Rank Progression
Kendo uses a kyu/dan ranking system. Lower kyu grades are for beginners, and dan grades begin at Shodan. In competition Kendo, practitioners wear kendogi (uniform), hakama, and bogu armor.
